Counselling

If you are thinking about counselling, it is likely that something is happening in your life that is not having the impact that you hoped it would.  This situation might be causing you discomfort, distress and be getting in the way of you living the life you want to be living.

The counselling work that we will do together will help you to identify changes you want to make in your life and offer you support to make these at a pace that feels right for you.  We will also explore the hopes you have for your future and together look at what might be standing in the way of putting these hopes into practice.

It is important to me that the counselling conversations we are having are helpful and supportive for you and we will identify some goals for our counselling work together during our first session.  We will review our work together regularly, as these goals may change along the way.

Therapeutic Approach

My counselling approach is informed by postmodern, social constructionist ways of understanding the world and by the ideas and practices of narrative therapy.  I also draw on tools and techniques from other modalities that complement this.

The conversations we have will include regular review of how counselling is going for you and when needed we will tailor the approach we are taking so that it works for you.

Areas of specialisation

I specialise in working with those struggling with disordered eating and eating issues. I also offer counselling and support for those who are engaged in sport at any level and wanting to address difficulties and/or worries around fuelling their body. In addition to this, I offer support and counselling for those who are supporting or caring for a loved one who is living with an eating disorder.

I also specialise in working with adolescents and students in tertiary study and with those of all ages struggling with LGBTIAQ issues.

Background

I trained at Waikato University and have a Masters Degree in Counselling – awarded with first class honours in 2008. I have worked with adults and adolescents in a variety of settings; as a counsellor, teacher and facilitator. I am a trained secondary school teacher, though no longer teach in the New Zealand system.  I have also worked as a counsellor with self-referred adult individuals and couples, and mediated Family Court cases.

Fees are $140.00 for a 50-60 minute session. Payment is required at the time of the session. If you are eligible, I can also help you to apply for some financial support from either WINZ or StudyLink to help cover the cost of our sessions.  Please note, appointments not kept or cancelled with less than 48 hours notice, will be charged for at the full rate. I do not have EFTPOS facilities, so cash or cheque payment is required. Alternatively, internet payment can be arranged.

Ethical Observations

I adhere to the Code of Ethics of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) and am a full member of NZAC. I also attend training, workshops and professional supervision regularly. On-going professional supervision is a career-long requirement for all active NZAC members and for me is a process that provides space for professional development and the continual growing of the knowledges I access in the therapy room.

Online counselling

I also offer online counselling for New Zealand based clients. If this interests you, please contact me to discuss.

Practitioner Supervision

Alongside my counselling practice, I offer Supervision services for those working in the counselling and support fields.  This includes those working towards full NZAC membership, and is open to training, newly qualified and experienced therapists.  Supervision is available online upon request.
