Background
I qualified as a Clinical Psychologist in 1987 from Victoria University of Wellington. I worked for one year in a Psychiatric facility in Auckland before spending the next 18 years in England working for the NHS. I specialised in Child and Adolescent Mental Health across paediatrics, outpatient and inpatient adolescent mental health, assessment and therapy with individuals, parents and families. I returned to New Zealand at the end of 2005 and since 2006 have worked in Youth Forensic Mental Health, Primary Care and in private practice. I have been in full-time private practice since 2018 in Auckland and Warkworth. I am contracted to provide services to Oranga Tamariki-Ministry for Children, ACC and as a Health Assessor to the Courts of New Zealand.
Since qualifying with a foundation in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy(CBT), I have undertaken post graduate training in Systemic Family Therapy, Dialectic Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and latterly Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR).
I have a strong neuro-developmental perspective with training in assessment of Intellectual Disability(ID), Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD) and Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder(FASD) in children and adults.
My approach with clients is collaborative, caring and supportive. I see myself as both a participant and facilitator of change.
Specialisatons
Given my nearly 36 years practicing as a Clinical Psychologist, I have covered most areas of mental wellbeing and across the life span. I bring expertise and years of experience to my work with individuals (both children and adults), couples and families across a broad range of issues including psychiatric disorders, mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, addictions, relationship breakdown, domestic violence, gender and sexuality and childhood trauma to name a few key areas. As mentioned above, I can offer specialist assessments wth children and adults regarding ID, ASD and FASD.
Another area of specialty is International Adoption assessments and reports. I have assisted many individuals and couples to adopt from Thailand, The Phillipines, India and South America. Finally I offer supervision to other psychologists and in particular those contracted to Oranga Tamariki and ACC who require specialist supervision in diagnosis, report writing and delivery of trauma therapy. I am recognised by ACC as a supervisor for those with provisional status.
